Sometimes, a standard pallet just isn’t going to cut it.
From bulky machinery and long components to awkwardly shaped freight, some goods simply need a little more room. That’s where oversized pallet delivery comes in.
Sending an oversized pallet doesn’t have to be complicated, but getting the measurements, pallet size and collection arrangements right before booking can make all the difference.
Here’s everything you need to know before sending an oversized pallet.
What Is an Oversized Pallet?
An oversized pallet is used when your goods exceed the dimensions or limits of the standard pallet space they would otherwise travel on.
This could be because your freight is particularly long, wide, tall or heavy. It could also be because the shape of the goods means they cannot be stacked safely alongside other freight.
Common examples can include:
- Machinery and machine parts
- Long or bulky components
- Building materials
- Large pieces of equipment
- Freight that extends beyond the pallet base
- Wide or unusually shaped goods that cannot be stacked
With PalletOnline, oversized options are available for quarter, half and full pallet shipments, giving larger goods the additional space they need during transport.
Top Tip: Measure the freight you’re actually sending – not the pallet you started with. Once everything is packed, wrapped and secured, measure the complete loaded pallet at its widest, longest and highest points.
How Big Can an Oversized Pallet Be?
The maximum size depends on the type of oversized pallet you book.
| Oversized pallet type | Maximum length | Maximum width | Maximum height | Maximum weight |
| Quarter oversized | 2.0m | 1.2m | 0.6m | 250kg |
| Half oversized | 2.0m | 1.2m | 1.0m | 500kg |
| Full oversized | 2.4m | 1.2m | 2.2m | 2,000kg |
These dimensions allow considerably more room than our standard pallet options, particularly when you’re sending longer freight.
What If My Pallet Is Even Longer?
Need more space? In some cases, additional single pallet spaces can be booked to accommodate extra length.
Quarter and half oversized pallets can extend to 3.0m long, while a full oversized pallet can extend to 3.6m long when the appropriate additional space is booked. The respective weight limits still apply.
If your goods fall outside the maximum dimensions we accept, contact PalletOnline before booking so our team can confirm whether they can be carried.
If you’ve reached the point where your tape measure needs a tape measure, it’s probably worth checking the dimensions with us before you book.
Standard vs Oversized Pallets: What’s the Difference?
The main difference is the amount of vehicle space your freight requires.
Our standard pallet options cover micro, quarter, half and full pallets, with different height and weight limits depending on the service selected. Oversized pallet options allow additional space for freight that cannot safely travel within those standard limits.
Booking the correct size matters because the space is allocated specifically for your freight.
If a pallet is booked too small, it may need to be upgraded and an additional surcharge applied. If you book more space than you actually need, unused space isn’t refunded.
In other words: measuring properly before booking could save both time and unexpected costs.
How to Measure an Oversized Pallet Correctly
Measuring your pallet sounds straightforward, but this is one of the most important parts of arranging oversized pallet delivery.
You should measure your shipment after your goods have been completely packed and secured to the pallet.
Make sure you record:
Length
Measure the longest point from one end of the loaded pallet to the other.
If your goods stick out beyond the pallet base, measure to the end of the goods – not the edge of the wooden pallet.
Width
Measure the widest point of the complete shipment, including any packaging or protruding items.
Height
Measure from the ground to the highest point of the shipment.
Remember that the pallet base itself forms part of the total measurement.
Weight
Your declared weight should include your goods, packaging and the pallet itself.
As a general guide when working out the final dimensions, the pallet base can add around 20cm to the height and 20kg to the weight of your shipment.
Top Tip: Never rely on the dimensions from the product specification alone. Packaging, protective materials and the pallet base can all increase the final size of your shipment.
Do Oversized Pallets Need a Forklift?
Yes.
A forklift or equivalent loading and unloading equipment must be available at both the collection and delivery locations for oversized pallet deliveries.
This is especially important because tail-lift services aren’t available for oversized pallets.
Before booking, check that:
- Suitable equipment is available at the collection address
- Suitable equipment will also be available at the delivery address
- The equipment can safely handle the size and weight of the loaded pallet
- There is enough access for the collection and delivery vehicles
Finding out there’s no forklift once several hundred kilograms of freight has arrived isn’t an ideal time to start making alternative plans.
Why Accurate Measurements Matter
When you book a pallet delivery, the dimensions you provide help determine how much room your freight needs on the vehicle.
That becomes even more important with oversized freight.
If a shipment turns out to be longer, wider, taller or heavier than declared, additional space may be required before it can continue through the network. Booking your pallet correctly from the start helps reduce the risk of delays and unexpected surcharges.
You should also include your pallet’s full length, width and height in the goods description when booking an oversized delivery.
Top Tip: If your measurements sit between two pallet sizes, go for the larger option. It’s better to book the space your freight needs from the start than discover it doesn’t fit later.
