Commodity code questions

Get the code right first time.

What is a commodity code?

A number that tells customs exactly what your goods are. It sets the duty and taxes due and decides which rules apply to the consignment.

How many digits do I need?

Use the full 10-digit code for every line on the commercial invoice. If you only have 6 or 8 digits, enter them above to see the full codes that start with them.

What if more than one code could fit?

Choose the most specific description that matches what the goods are made of and what they are used for. If you are still unsure, HMRC can give classification advice.

Where do the codes come from?

From the UK Trade Tariff on GOV.UK, which HMRC keeps up to date. You are responsible for the code you declare.
